Refurbishment Projects

Working with partners and students we have a number of building refurbishment projects underway.  The scope of the projects range from full scale refurbishment to performance modeling.

319 Main Street: Victorian America

The '319 Main Street' project is an exciting new development in the heart of downtown Southbridge, Massachusetts.  The coming year will see the completion of the building refurbishment in a sustainable manner and employing the latest thinking in energy and water use, material selection, ecology, health and wellbeing, pollution and waste minimization.

When complete, Memorial Hall will contain a suite of sustainable units; the ground floor will house two commercial units and an office; the second floor will house four affordable units and the third floor will contain three market rate units.

The work has been carried out in line with the Framework for Sustainable refurbishment.  The success of the project is being used to validate the concepts of Next Generation of Refurbishment.

92 O'Connell Street:  Georgian Limerick

The '92 O'Connell Street' project is being undertaken as a cooperative education program by third year students in the Construction Management and Engineering course.  The aim of the project is to develop energy models for a range of different Georgian buildings.  The building selected for the base model is located in the centre of the Georgian Block in Limerick city.  The models will be used to advise owners about stratigies to improve the energy performance of the buildings while preserving heritage.  The performance of the model will be validated using remote temperature measurements and thermal imaging.

1 Main Street:  Huguenot Laois

The '1 Main Street' project will see the refurbishment of the external cladding of a 300 year old Huguenot building.  The project is being supported by a grant from the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.  The grant funding will be used to refurbish the exterior brick facade and replace windows throughout the building.  An energy model of the building is being developed to ssess the viability of applying an external cladding to the rear surfaces of the building.  Work is scheduled to commence in July 2010.
