Preventing Ice Dams; Paul Larkin We have been working with a client to develop a solar ice melter to eliminate the problem. Our approach is the collecting solar radiation and conducting the heat to the drains using simple heat pipes. We have built and tested a prototype device. The performance of the device is such that the ice melter can easily reach twenty degrees while the air temperature is below freezing temperatures and there are scattered clouds in the sky.
